Heading down Cedar Avenue
We were followed by a young German Shepherd.
He turned with us on to our dirt road.
Bobby and I nodded, we had a dog.
If just for the long weekend.
We got Rex some hamburger meat.
He stayed through our salami sandwiches,
And 2 man basketball game.
He was there after we had an early dinner.
When the rain hit
We hustle Rex onto the covered porch.
Mom didn’t like that.
Before dawn I heard Dad
Forcing Rex out into the RAIN.
In the morning Rex was waiting for us,
With a running nose.
For 3 rainless days we had this great dog.
I could not imagine leaving him,
But leave him we did.
I cried and concluded I had been adopted.
